Uglies: Final Thoughts

So I'm making this my last post for the book. Go figure; Shay turns pretty first and has no idea about the lesions. Tally ends the book by saying she wants to turn pretty to a hover patrol officer. There was the whole smokies mess and David knows about the unintentional betrayal. Did I miss anything?
People died, Specials are superhuman, lesions are indiscriminately placed in turning pretties heads and removed if they need them out for their profession, and there are more cities than just Tally's.
I predicted a society v.s society conflict and that is what I got. The only hard part with any of the conflicts I discussed is picking which side won. The Smokies have a potential cure for lesions and the cities physically destroyed the original location of the smoke.
I think the fun part with all of this is that nobody in this book really wins. Everyone is forced into one situation after another without much real choice. The Special Circumstances work hard to preserve secrets about the way things really work in the city, and the common person in the city is "happy".
The "to-take" message for me from this book is on page 346.

"Maybe they didn't want you to realize that every civilization has its weakness. There's always one thing we depend on. And if someone takes it away, all that's left is some story in a history class."

It seems like this civilization depends on the lesions to function at it's normal level, so if the lesions are taken away, that could end this civilization and that is what special circumstances is fighting for. We see them as the bad guys taking away brain capacity but in another light they could be seem as the last preserving force for their civilization.

  1. I agree with your post. The bottom of your post reminds me of the saying, "Ignorance is bliss."

  2. I agree and like your "nobody really wins" idea. It gets old reading books and the bad guys losing and the good guys winning. It was nice to change it up a bit. I was really bummed about the ending though.

  3. I like the last quote because it made me wonder what our civilization weakness is. We try so hard to preserve ourselves that we forget that every good thing comes to an end.And I think that its interesting how the Smokies are down but they are not necessarily out for the fight. Just look at how quickly the Smokies built back up in the ruins. No one is the clear winner but I don't think anybody has really loss..because there is more to come.
